Obaatanpa, A woman’s Ideal Virtual Friend
The founders of Obaatanpa which means “good mother” in the Ghanaian local dialect, Twi are Emmanuel Sarfo and Juliana Naa Ode Hammond. During the Ghana Tech Lab free national web development training, Juliana’s sister who was a first-time expectant mother had issues with getting access to information on maternal and child health. This was due to the outbreak of the deadly pandemic, which hindered her from visiting the hospital.
This issue Juliana’s sister faced coupled with Emmanuel’s passion to make the society better through software development, birthed this idea which will provide reliable and professional information to pregnant women and mothers. Obaatanpa will also provide a platform where specialists and certified health professionals can prescribe quality, affordable medications for the women.
Obaatanpa will be a friend to pregnant women and mothers, with the aim of prioritizing maternal and child health using technology. The web application will serve as a virtual community designed to fill the information gap concerning maternal and child health, by educating women on what they need to know about pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. It also seeks to connect clients to specialists and establish personalized two-way communication between both parties. With Obaatanpa, clients can have recommendations of hospitals and health centres based on proximity, reminders on antenatal appointments and also restock their medications on the online pharmacy. In addition to all this, Obaatanpa clients can share their experiences and grievances on pregnancy and their children’s health and get advice from specialists.
Out of respect for clients’ privacy, Obaatanpa has encrypted all medical records to secure them from unauthorized access. Obaatanpa is every woman’s ideal virtual friend and is here to help.
